Hundreds of years ago, the Seneca Indians lived on and established a major trail through what is now Clarksburg, Maryland. John Clarke and his family moved from Pennsylvania to this land in the mid-18th Century to trade with the Seneca. First, he constructed a temporary shelter, then built a permanent trading post which eventually became the town of Clarksburg.

By 1870, Clarksburg had become a thriving commercial center, anchored by its agricultural trade. But when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad chose other cities in Maryland to route it’s rail line through, Clarksburg lost its economic eminence. Now the historic town inhabited by the Seneca and later settled by John Clarke, is the center of activity again.
